NPC Weekly Devotional
for the Week of October 19th - 25th, 2008

Scripture Reading:
 - Deuteronomy 34:1-12
 - Psalm 90
 - 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8
 - Matthew. 22:34-46

Have you ever watch the glee and joy with which children play with blowing bubbles. They float in the air like iridescent Christmas ornaments, only to disappear a second later. And children all try to catch them before they disappear. Even if they do catch the bubbles, they immediately disappear anyway. The same is true with cotton candy. As your mouth waters you go for a bite of that tantalizing pink bouquet, only to have it dissolve in your mouth almost as soon as you bite it. We learn early how many things in life are merely fleeting illusions.

In our Psalm for this week Moses weaves together contrasting images to teach us that our earthly existence is like those bubbles or that sugary confection. We are “dust” that blows or is swept away or “new grass that springs up in the morning, but withers away by nightfall.”

However, God is eternal. God does not measure time the same way we do either. We must remember that our lives are fleeting and live each day to the fullest – loving and praising God.
