Scripture Reading:
 - Exodus 20:1-4, 7-9, 12-20
 - Psalm 19
 - Philippians 3:4b-14
 - Matthew 21:33-46

Verse 14 of this Psalm is often used by preachers not only as they work at writing their sermons, but also on Sunday mornings before they begin to pray. But as I was reading the Psalter this week, I was struck by the fact that it is not necessarily referring to just a pastor’s preaching. “May the words of my mouth and the mediation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer” is speaking to everyone of us in all that we say, all that we do, and all that we think upon. God is calling us to watch the words we say and the things we think upon.

The reason for this concern is told to us earlier in this Psalm. Here, God reveals Himself to us. We are not left in darkness, God communicated through the sky and the Scripture. All of creation reveals God’s invisible qualities.

I am reminded of the song “But Greater Still” by Don Wyrtzen.

“God speaks to me in creation and my heart sings His praise,
He paints His revelation in a thousand different ways;
His handiwork reveals His glory in its intricate design,
His infinite creativity is a miracle divine.

The skies tell me of His glory – what a dazzling display!
They give a silent witness of His presence every day;
The skies tell me a moving story by the interplay of light,
Their message reaches everywhere on a starry summer night.

But greater still is His perfect Word so rich with wealth untold.
It’s sweeter than a honeycomb, worth more to me than gold,
So may my life always please my Lord in every simple way,
And may I praise His precious name in thoughts and words today.”

This week, pay attention to what God is revealing about Himself in the world around you and pay extra attention to what you are saying and thinking – may they both be acceptable to God.
